particles flocculate on hitting high ionic strength seawater. ie. the addn. of a strong electrolyte.
• Flocculation occurs in the
low-salinity region of the estuary.
•The most abundant inorganic
colloids are
-ve charge clay particles.
• A high conc. of the cations (Na+, Mg2+, K+) reduces
the surface negative charge.
• Structural cation exchange also occurs where Ca2+ is
exchanged for Na+, Mg2+, K+.
