NUTRIENT INPUTS
• Dissolved Inorganic Phosphorus (DIP) is
present in several forms:   H3PO4 D H2PO4- + H+
H2PO4- +H+ D HPO42- + 2H+  HPO42- + H+ D PO43- + H+
plants adsorb
These soluble forms are not readily leached
from soils Ca3(PO4)2(s).  Normal [DIP] » 2 m M.
• Nitrate (NO3-) and Ammonium (NH4+) are
the two key soluble forms of nitrogen.
NH4+ - N(-III), Plants use mainly NO3-  - N(V).
• Sewerage & agriculture Ò PO43-(aq), NO3-(aq).
• The N / P ratio is variable (»10) in rivers but does indicate the state of the inputs.
