OXIC - ANOXIC
BOUNDARY
• In a stratified
lake (summer) the warm upper oxic layer will contain algal biomass.
• Organic matter produced sinks into the cold
deeper waters where it is oxidised producing O2 depletion
& an anoxic layer.
• In between is an oxic
- anoxic boundary.
• Groundwaters also usually have an
oxic - anoxic boundary but this is due to mineralisation.
