ORIGIN OF D.O.M.
•  The origin of the humic matter is:
 (i) imported from breakdown of:
      (A) higher plant material (lignins)
      (B) microorganisms in the soils.
(ii) produced in-situ in a water body
eg. wetlands (swamp) by decay of plant material and dead water microorganisms.
• The formation is either by:
(a) degradative transformation of lignins (+waxes`…) to HM.
(b) via total break down of macromolecules to small molecules and then condensation polymerisation to form HM polymers.
• In the oceans formation from triglycerides
is thought to be a major route to HM.
