• In natural waters there are a large number
of organic compounds – referred to as Dissolved Organic Matter (DOM).
• Analysis of water samples gives the Dissolved Organic Carbon (DOC) content.
(filter 0.7mm, remove inorganic C, TOC analysis)
• The carbon% in DOM is taken as 60%
Þ conversion factor DOM = 1.7 x DOC
• The DOM is still quite poorly characterized (2005, 80%?) material in the oceans.
• There are 2 major subdivisions of DOM:
(1) Non-humic fraction (» 20%): contains recognisable organic compounds such as: hydrocarbons -1%, nucleic acids -1%, fatty acids -1% monosaccharides -7% and many other minor components.
