ALKALINITY I
• ANC is synonymous with Alkalinity.
• There are various types of alkalinity.
• The determination of the Total Alkalinity of a water sample involves titration with HCl to the methyl orange (pH4.3) end point:
 - all bases are titrated out at this point.
• The determination of just the Caustic Alkalinity involves  titration to pH 10.7 using a pH probe: mainly [OH-] is found.
• Finding the Carbonate Alkalinity (phenolphthalein alkalinity) involves titration to the phenolphthalein (8.2) end pt: mostly [CO32-] has been determined as most natural waters have pH <10.7.
