EVAPORATION
• A significant amount of the solar E which strikes the surface is used to vaporise water which carries away latent heat from the surface (this is slowly released as heat as the H2O condenses). H2O has a high latent
heat of vaporistion LEvap 
= E to vaporise 1 mol H2O
 LEvap = 2 kJ / g
• Sensible heat is due to
the kinetic energy of
heated air molecules.
• In conjunction with the
differential Esolar received
at different latitudes this
creates the convection which moves the air masses.
