CORROSIVES
5) Corrosive substances are chemicals that dissolve metals or cause oxides such as rust to form on the surface of metals.
• Most corrosives are one of the following chemical classes:
1) strong acid 2) strong base
3) oxidant 4) dehydrating agent
• Sulphuric acid: corrosive,
oxidant, forms toxic gases
with many reagents.
A strong dehydrating agent:
DO NOT ADD water TO acid.
Localised boiling will occur
with acid splashing.
