CHARACTERISTICS OF
DIFFERENT KINDS OF SUBSTANCE
1) Flammable & Combustible liquids
Flash point: an ignitable liquid is heated in steps and exposed to a flame. At some T the vapour / air ratio is sufficient for ignition to occur at the liquid surface.
Flammable liquid:                 flash point < 60.5oC
Combustible liquid: 60.5oC < flash point < 93.5oC
Diethyl ether  f.p. -43oC    Acetone f.p. -20oC
Toluene          f.p.    4oC   Methanol f.p.  12oC
 Naphthalene f.p. 157oC
2) Pyrophoric substance (type of flammable)
These substances catch fire without an ignition source eg. white phosphorus, Na.
