HAZARDOUS WASTES
• A hazardous substance is a material that
may pose a danger to living organisms by explosion,  fire hazard, corrosion, toxicity to organisms or other detrimental effects.
• A hazardous waste is a hazardous substance released as a waste material.
Not to be disposed of in a landfill or sewer.
• In Australia there are around 10 000 t
stockpiled awaiting disposal. Around 430 t
are generated per year and 500 t / y of OrganoChlorine (OCs) wastes are exported.
• US: 80% comes from chemical & petroleum
industries, 15% comes from mining.
