• Nitrification (oxic conditions, BOD not used) is followed by denitrification (anoxic conditions,
BOD used) to remove N.
Effluent stream TN
5mg/L.
• Enhanced Biological
Phosphorus Removal (EBPR) uses Phosphorus Accumulating Organisms (PAO) such as Acinetobacter to increase
the phosphorus content in the biomass
from 2% (normal) to up to 10% - dramatically
lowering the P content of the effluent
to TP 1 mg/L.
• The PAO require anaerobic conditions initially and plenty of BOD (esp. fatty acids).
• Even oxidation
ditches (Yorkeys Knob) can be used in
simple BNR processes.
