BNR PLANTS
• In Port Douglas
a Biological Nutrient
Removal (BNR) plant is used for sewage treatment – this is a tertiary treatment plant.
• The BNR plants use a single bioreactor and are usually operated in sequencing batch mode where raw sewage is fed into an existing settled sludge blanket.
• There are three distinct zones
(or sequences): anaerobic(EBPR), aerobic(nitrification), anoxic(denitrification).
• The process is engineered so the micro-organisms remove N, P greater than metabolic amounts normally used, they achieve this by using specific organisms.
