LEAD
• Lead is produced from Pb, Zn & Ag mines.
• Free lead metal is generally not a big problem,   b.p. 1740oC & low vap. pressure.
• Produced at around 33.2 x 106 t y-1
  Natural environment mobilises 12 x 103 t y-1
• Lead is mainly used in lead-acid storage
batteries (40%) and lead alkyl compounds used in leaded petrol (‘undeveloped’ places).
Africa phase out possible 2005.
• Oxidation states : 0, +2, +4
• The Pb from leaded petrol combustion has dispersed all over the globe as 75% of the Pb combusted was released as PbO aerosol.
