PAH I
• PolycyclicAromatic Hydrocarbons
contain two or more fused
aromatic rings. At least 8 of
the PAHs are possible carcinogens.
• The simplest is napthalene that is used in mothballs.    Problem ones are C10 ® C24
• PAHs form during incomplete combustion.
Forest fires, volcanic eruptions, diesel
engines, cigarettes, barbeques, coal-fires.
• Either built up from small hydrocarbon radicals by pyrosynthesis or by breakdown of large hydrocarbons by pyrolysis (cracking)
