DDT I
Geigy Company discovered the insecticidal
properties of DDT in 1939.      IUPAC name :
  bis[4-chlorophenyl]-2,2,2-trichloroethane
Common: DichloroDiphenylTrichloroethane
• By WW II it  was being sprayed on pets,
people, cities, lakes, swamps to eliminate
pests carrying diseases. (fleas, mosquitos)
• Interferes with nerve
functions, Na /K pump,
insect paralysis & death.
• Cheap, odourless, apparently non-toxic!
