ANTARCTIC OZONE HOLE I
• 1985 Antarctic stratospheric ozone  : 50%
• ClO. +  NO2.   ® ClONO2   (chlorine nitrate)
• normal reservoir of Cl and NOx  (NO, NO2)
• global circulation ®  ClONO2 at the pole.
• Polar winter, no new O3 , air temp <  -70oC
• The air circulation becomes circumpolar
with nearly no admixture of air from lower
latitudes.  [O3] and [ClONO2] are fixed.
• Polar Stratospheric Clouds (PSC,
  HNO3.3H2O) form which contain acid
ice crystals, these maintain low [NO2].
