ATMOSPHERIC
STRUCTURE
• In the Troposphere the air is mixed by the
winds – turbulent mixing.
• There are strong convective movements as ground
air is warm and the upper air cold – less dense air rises, cold air
sinks.
• In the Stratosphere there are weak winds
and so the gases do not mass fractionate.
• The strata of air
are stable, the lower layers are colder than upper layers –
upper layers warmed
by photochemical rxns forming O3.
• There is no convective movement of air and [O3]
is at a maximum in this region.
