CHARACTERISATION
• The clay mineral content of a soil is another important parameter as this
determines the buffering capacity of the soil 
• Microscopy: the presence of sulphide crystals or framboids.
•The texture is also taken
into account by carrying out
particle size measurements.
Particle size controls the rate
of reaction. If the pyritic particle size is large
then the rate of oxidation will be slow.
• The soil must be properly described and
any sampling carefully marked for depth
and position on site maps.
