SULPHUR & ACID TRAILS
• S. Trail requires sulphate analyses, which are best performed with ICP-OES
Inductively Coupled Plasma -OES
• Problems: the presence of jarosite
KFe3(SO4)2(OH)6 results in over-estimates of the potential acid generation.
• Acid trail : measures the Total Sulphidic Acidity  units: mol H+  per tonne of dry soil.
                   TSA = TPA - TAA
TPA Total Potential Acidity of peroxide digest.
TAA Total Actual Acidity of KCl soil extract.
• Problems: if large shells are present it under-estimates potential acid generation.
