Assessing acid sulphate generatn potential:
1) Total Oxidisable Sulphur (TOS) a screening approach to evaluate the potential environmental risk from acid produced by the oxidation of sulphides.
• Quick,
inexpensive, but needs S analyses.
TOS = total sulfur - extractable sulfur (4M
HCl)
=
g(oxidisable S) / g(dry soil) x 100%
• Provides a
measure of pyrite content but not of the
‘actual soil acidity’ which includes previous
partial oxidation of sulphides.
