OCCURANCE
Soil formations where ASS are common.
• Most ASS are found around the high tide mark, < 5 metres above high tide mark.
• ASS were originally deposited in marine or estuarine settings generally as dark grey to dark greenish-grey muds.
• The deposits form in iron-rich sediments,
+ sulphate (seawater), sulphate reducing bacteria & plenty of vegetation.
eg. mangroves, tidal areas, salt marsh.
• This limits the ASS occurrence to coastal floodplains & rivers and swamps with a brackish influence at some stage.
