BARRON RIVER & TINAROO
• Barron River DPI study (2000) found:
• Certain catchments had elevated PO43-
and NO3-. The worst case was attributed to
sewage effluent discharge (Atherton).
• Tinaroo Dam also has inputs from Atherton
ST & agriculture.
• In 1998 the first
large blue-green
algae outbreak
was observed.
Cyanobacteria
(blue-green algae)
blooms are indicators of the 1st stage of eutrophication.

Cyanobacteria have the distinction of being the oldest known fossils, more than 3.5 billion years old.
They form Proterozoic oil deposits. Because they photosynthesize they are incorrectly called
blue-green algae (algae are eukaryotes), bacteria are prokaryotes.
