IONISING RADIATION
• Ionising radiation includes a, b and g.
• a particles have a short range (lungs 60 mm)  - internally they do damage (eg. 222Rn).
• b particles & g rays are longer range & will pass thru skin (eg. 90Sr) Þ more dangerous.
• Curie (Ci) is the number of decay events /s
in 1g of 226Ra (SI: Becquerel; 1Ci = 3 x 107 Bq)
• Radiation Adsorbed Dose (rad): radiation required so that tissue adsorbs 1x10-2J / kg.
• mrem = 1 mrad x RBE   - a common
unit where RBE is a correction factor for the biological effectiveness of the radiation.
