NUCLEAR WASTES I
• The reprocessing facilities produce the worlds worst hazardous wastes. The mixed wastes are hot & contain mixtures of chemicals which are unstable. (eg. organic solvents & HNO3).
• A spent fuel rod
is far more radioactive than the
original rod as substantial amounts of non-useful, highly radioactive
nuclides result from fission & the decay series.
• After 10 years most of the radioactivity
is
due to 90Sr (t½ 28y) and 137Cs (t½ 30y).
