Ion
Chromatography is the method of choice for anion analysis in
natural waters using an anion exchange resin.
• A column is made up in the CO32- form and the
anionic sample is placed on the column.
• Gradient elution
with Na2CO3 will separate anions according to
selectivity eg SO42- > NO3-
• A membrane ion
suppressor
is used which protonates the
anions. H2CO3 doesn’t ionise
much while other ions
(eg HNO3 H2SO4)
do.
• Detectors: Normally a
conductivity detector is used
as this has a universal
response to ionic analytes.
