Instrument
Detection Limit (IDL)
• The minimum
concentration which may be
discriminated from zero.
1) IDL
= 3 s (calib. blank)
s =standard deviation
eg. 12.00 ± 0.01 s = 0.01 \ 3s = 0.03
2) IDL
S/N > 2:1 (with lowest level of analyte)
Limit of
quantitation (LOQ) = 10 s
(blank)
This is the limit of analyte that can be detected
on the instrument with confidence.
Method Detection
Limit (MDL) : obtained using
spiked samples, the lowest level which gives a LOQ is the MDL.
It gives the lowest level of quantitation for the entire analytical
procedure not just the instrument.
