• Particulate matter is collected by either a Hi-Vol
sampler or a Cascade Impactor.
Both may give total solids (TSP)
and fractions
(PM10 particles < 10mm, PM2.5),
as well as species by
further analysis.
• The Hi-Vol sampler (75 m3 h-1) essentially a vacuum
cleaner (25 cm diameter) uses a impactor to cut off the
appropriate particle fraction which is collected on a
quartz filter membrane. mg /m3
• The Cascade impactor
(0.5m3 h-1) fractionates particles
on the basis of mass.
A particle
will stick to one of
the preweighed teflon
covered
stages if it has
sufficient
momentum.
