SOIL FERTILITY
• Fertile soils contain suficient of the macro-elements such as: N, P, K, Mg, Ca, S to produce a desired plant crop.
• Soil humus is the reservoir for N.
• Weathered minerals provide P & K.
• Often the natural levels of N, P and K must be supplemented by fertilisers to enable high crop yields to be maintained.
• Fertilisers such as 6-12-8 (N-P-K) are used.
• The natural levels of the macroelements
present in soils are linked to the other
reservoirs within the geochemical cycles.
