SOIL DEFINITION
• Five parameters commonly
used to define a soil are:
1) particle size: eg. UCS
2) texture: proportion of
components, triangle diagram
3) density: bulk density:
1.0 – 1.8 g mL-1; particle density: OM 1g mL-1
7 g mL-1 M-sulfides; the difference =pore space.
4) structure: field characteristic indicating
how particles aggregate to form larger units:
granular, plate like, block like, prism like
5) permeability: hydraulic conductivity
1 -  5 cm h-1 is normal, a functn of texture
Sands 2-0.06 mm
Silts 0.06-0.006 mm
Clays <0.006 mm
