SEDIMENTS
• Sediments are bulk solids at the bottom of rivers, lakes, estuaries & oceans which consist of clay, silt, sand & organic matter.
• Microscopic pores in the sediment contain
pore water which is readily available to organisms.    (local gas concentrations.eg CH4)
• The conditions of sediments are normally
anaerobic, reducing and highly leached.
• Clays, humic matter & clay-humic complexes are the major classes of substances responsible for organic binding in sediments.
