• Dissolution of a gas in
a raindrop involves
a 2 step mixing process.
1) transfer of the gas to the liquid - fast
2) mixing within the drop - slow
A typical raindrop is 50% saturated in 0.3 s
2) Gas
transfer to the ocean occurs by a similar
means during “dry deposition”.
The flux (F) of a gas (or solid) to the ocean is described by
F = vg ([ig ] - [il])
[ig ] = conc. of the gas in the atmosphere.
[il ] = conc. of the gas in the ocean.
vg is the deposition
velocity eg
SO2 1 cm s-1
F = m s-1 x mol m-3 = mol m-2 s-1
