1) What differences in physical properties
would you expect for elemental Be and
elemental B?
Detail your reasoning.
1) Be is a metal and
as such should show
good electrical and
thermal conductivity.
It is hard as
it is small and has 2 valence electrons
to put into M-M bonding and will have
high melting and boiling points.
B is a
metalloid and an intrinsic
semiconductor and so the
electrical conductivity
will be lower than Be but will increase
with T. The element will be hard
and have high mp. and bp.
as it is a network
covalent solid.
