Metal Ions and Oxidation Numbers.
• For neutral and cationic complexes, the usual name of the
metal is used, followed in brackets by the
formal oxidation number on the metal in Roman numerals
eg. [Fe(H2O)6]Cl2 hexaaquairon(II)
chloride.
• For an anionic complex, the metal adds the suffix "ate", and often
uses the Latin form
• Ferrate
Argentate Cuprate Stannate
Aurate Plumbate
eg.
K3[Fe(CN)6] potassium
hexacyanoferrate(III)
Na2[Cr(H2O)Cl5]
sodium aquapentachlorochromate(III)
