Commonly, the number of ligands associated with a particular metal ion falls in the range 2 to 6.
• The coordination number of a metal ion is numerically equal to the number of donor atoms (from the ligands) attached to the metal ion. 
          Coord. no. = no. of donor atoms
eg. the coordination number of copper(II) in [Cu(NH3)4]2+ is four ( 4 x coord. N atoms)
