FORMATION CONSTANT
• Coordination compounds are often formed
by metathesis reactions (often also redox).
     eg. Ni2+(aq) + 2dmg-(aq) D [Ni(dmg)2](aq)
• This is a type of metathesis reaction, the product formed is a weak electrolyte.
• Complex ions (eg. Ag(NH3)2+) in solution always show some degree of dissociation.
    eg. Ag+(aq) + 2NH3(aq) D    [Ag(NH3)2]+(aq)
• We will work with a special equilibrium constant called the formation constant Kf to
describe the extent of dissociation.
