AROMATIC BROMINATION I

In contrast to the bromination of alkenes a Lewis acid catalyst must be used for the reaction to occur at all.
• The energy of reaction for the formation of bromobenzene is exothermic.
• The formation of the addition
product (substituted hexadiene)
is highly endothermic and so
this reaction does not occur.
