NAMING COMPLEXES V
Numerical prefixes.
• The occurrence of
two or more ligands (or metal atoms) is
indicated by the prefixes di, tri,
tetra, penta or hexa
• For polysyllabic organic bi-/multi- dentate ligands and/or ligands containing di, tri etc then bis
(2) and tris(3) are used to reduce confusion with the naming inside the ligand (which will be di, tri ...).
eg. [Ni(en)2]Cl2 (en = NH2CH2CH2NH2) bis(ethylenediamine)nickel(II) chloride
eg. [Ni(en)2]Cl2 (en = NH2CH2CH2NH2) bis(ethylenediamine)nickel(II) chloride
