LIGAND TYPES
• A potential ligand must have an atom
with an unshared pair
of electrons suitable for bond formation with the central metal ion.
• The donor
atoms in the ligand are those with available
electron density
ie. the more electronegative elements, on the right
hand side of the Periodic Table.
• A ligand may be neutral (e.g. the ammonia molecule, NH3) or charged (e.g. the chloride ion, Cl-).
