RELEVANCE
• A number of coordination complexes are used for important industrial and medical applications   cis-Pt(NH3)2Cl2
     eg cisplatin  is
used in chemotherapy.
• Metal complexes are also
found in biology:
1) chlorophyll, 2) hemoglobin,
3) carbonic anhydrase & 4) vitamin B12 :
1) magnesium, 2) iron, 3) zinc &  4) cobalt
coordination complexes.
The sequence-specific binding of cisplatin (cis-diamminedichloroplatinum(II)) to DNA appears to be responsible for its antitumor activity. The drug preferentially binds to Guanine bases and can introduce intrastrand crosslinks at dGdG, dGdXdG and dAdG sequences, whereas interstrand crosslinking can occur at dGdC-steps.
