1. Base promoted Hydrolysis (Saponification)
This is a nucleophilic acyl substitution,
a typical reaction of carboxylic acids and
their derivatives.
• The Fischer esterification is an example of
a nucleophilic acyl substitution. There are
two main steps : 1) nucleophilic addition &
2) elimination of the group which has been
substituted (a leaving group).
