C6H6 is highly unsaturated but does not display alkene reactivity (eg. no addition)
• Discovered by Michael Faraday in 1825 but the structure was only rationalised using valence bond theory in the 1930’s.
• The term aromatic was
used initially as benzene
& it’s derivatives have
distinctive aromas.
• The term arene is the
SI descriptor for this
class of organic cpmds.
