Benzene - C6H6
C6H6 is highly
unsaturated but does not display
alkene reactivity (eg. no addition)
Discovered by
Michael Faraday in 1825 but the
structure was only rationalised using valence bond theory in the 1930s.
The term aromatic was
used initially as
benzene
& its derivatives
have
distinctive aromas.
The term arene is the
SI descriptor for this
class of organic cpmds.
