HALF-REACTION
METHOD I
To
work out if a redox reaction is occuring:
1) write a half
reaction showing the organic
reactant(s) & the product(s)
reactant(s) & the product(s)
2) complete a material balance
in acid soln add H2O for additional O,
then add H+ for additional H.
in acid soln add H2O for additional O,
then add H+ for additional H.
in basic soln
then add OH- to both
sides
to equal H+, then cancel H2Os.

3) Complete a charge balance
add e- to the
side that is needed so that
the charge on both sides of the equation
