Deuterium (D) is an isotope (1p, 1n) of hydrogen with a different spin value (I = 1).
• D may be used when we want to substitute an H atom in a molecule & then observe the absence of the H signal in a NMR spectrum.
• D2O is the deutero
analogue of H2O and it may be used to identify OH & NH protons in an NMR spectrum.
• CDCl3 is the deutero analogue of CHCl3.
Again the 2D of the solvent is not
observed
when we are measuring 1H NMR spectra.
