CRYSTAL FIELD THEORY I
• In an isolated T-Metal atom or ion the
d orbitals are "degenerate" so that an electron in any of the five orbitals has the same energy.
• In Crystal Field Theory the ligands with their lone pairs are attracted to the cationic metal by electrostatic attraction.
• This is balanced by the electrostatic repulsion between electron pairs on adjacent ligands and the d-orbital electrons.
